30 Anthropologists and Designers Asking Questions

From October 15th to 18th Copenhagen University hosted the fourth Ethnographic Praxis in Industry Conference, EPIC. The conference focused on the use of ethnographic methods in today’s businesses. Friday afternoon, the participants went to some of these businesses. A large group chose CPH Design.

They listened to CPH Design engineer and PhD candidate Jamie Wallace’s presentation of CPH Design’s use of ethnography in the design processes.

The presentation was followed by several questions and answers: What can an anthropologist bring to CPH Design? We think that they can bring a different perspective and valuable insights particularly in people’s behaviour. How many anthropologists do you need in a single project? If any, it depends on the project. Is the anthropological work separated from the rest of your design work? No, it is an integrated part of what we do. People at CPH Design are not divided into different sections. And what we do with the customers is quite the same no matter our background: we listen, we try to understand, we co-create with people and we think together with them “through materials”. You can call this a part of the CPH culture.
